About eight years ago, before my first child came along, I got really into baking. I worked hard at my large sour dough loaves as well as pain l’ancienne and other European breads. I experimented with yeast and temperatures and rising times and water and flour. I LOVED baking bread only slightly more than I loved eating bread. A perfect breakfast to me was coffee with hot bread with butter and honey.
So, when our son came along, I was a little taken aback when Haley first suggested he might have a wheat allergy. I was certain this was just a bit of parenting hypersensitivity based on a silly trend. Really, I think I was also a bit overwhelmed at learning to cook and eat in a completely new way. But, many doctor visits, one emergency room stay, and a visit to the allergist later and there was no denying that we needed to change up our family’s diet. Our son was definitely allergic to wheat.
At first, this was pretty challenging and often frustrating. So many things I loved were off the table (pun intended). A lot of our quick meals were difficult, impossible, or cost-prohibitive without wheat products. This was especially true of breakfast where so many of our usual foods were gluten-filled. Complicating this efforts are three children with different and evolving tastes.
But, over the years, we’ve learned to explore new things, try new techniques, and easily make breakfast without wheat products. During all of this, we’ve really changed the way we eat breakfast. Since it’s no longer a quick bowl of cereal, we spend more time together in the mornings cooking and eating as a family. We also eat more vegetables and protein than we used to. I still love bread. But I’m definitely glad of the changes we’ve made over the years.
