Right now, I’m on my way to Oxford, Alabama for the Mount Cheaha 50k. I’ve never done this particular race before but I did run some of the trails through the Talladega National Forest during the Pinhoti 100 last November. It’s a beautiful area.
Sometimes, people ask, “How can you run that far?!”
And I’m like, “Yo, they got all the Jock Jams on the internet! How can you STOP running? ”
Besides the music, another great thing about ultrarunning is the snacks. Look!
The pop tarts are for pre-race carb loading. I don’t usually eat junk food. And I’ve already been carb loading this week with lots of oatmeal, grits, and pizza. But you want your muscles to be completely saturated with energy so the pop tarts can’t hurt. The candy you see here is for mid-race energy. Races usually have aid stations every few miles with all kinds of snacks; cookies, pretzels, sandwiches, and fruit. But I like to carry my favorites with me just in case they don’t have exactly what I want. I LOVE gummy bears.
A lot of folks I know we’ll be at this race so it’ll be fun to run with them for a while. But I miss my family when I have to be gone overnight. Fortunately, both Benjamin and Lucy wrote notes for me that I plan to carry the whole way. Here’s Benjamin’s map showing me at the start and finish. I seem to be pretty happy at both places so I hope that’s a sign of things to come.
